That fluid could have been 20 years old 20 years ago. The filter screen may be immersed in sludge, friction material and if exposed to moisture, worse. Everything more than likely will need to at least be freed up in the valve body. The servo and clutch rubber seals are probably hard and shrunk. If you still want to attempt to wake this trans up, start by dropping the pan and have a look & see. But for the long haul, it will need to come apart for a  rebuild.  A pressure gauge could be easily attached just to see if anything is circulation at all but if it isn't, you would be running some parts dry.  The fluid might be changing back to dinosaur fat.   Hope this helps, good luck.........................

Automatic 55 Fords had a problem with the flex plate breaking, if the car doesn't move at all the flex plate may be the problem. (Replace with a 57 and up flex plate assembly)

I assume the engine is being started and the ring gear is part of the converter assembly.

darrell: You could try contacting Classic Thunderbird Club International.- They had copies made of the original Fordomatic Shop manuals in 2000. I don't have cost or details?  Apparently the '55 manual is somewhat different than '56-'57..
