I have a special request. From under the dash, looking at the back of the fuel gage, is the yellow wire (the one that supposedly comes from the tank sending unit) is it on the right hand lug (toward the door) or is it one the left hand lug (toward the steering column)...?? According to the wiring diagrams it is confusing.....so I need someone to physically verify it. My yellow wire has 6 volts on it and the procedure says to ground it to make the needle swing. I don't want to fry anything. Thanks as usual.

To Test Fuel Gauge I have always taken the Wire at the Tank Unit and grounded it with Power on at the Ignition so that the Gauges are powered.

Which wire? The hot wire from the gage or the ground wire at the tank? If that wire has 6 volts on it wont I be applying a direct short to ground? If it has 6volts at the gage, then it has 6volts at the tank. Thanks

The ground wire at the tank.
Yes there could be 6 volts there and "shorting it to ground" is the idea.
But the Gauge has parts internally that control the Amperage. It is the Amperage that can be damaging. Here it is very very small. Connect to ground only long enough to verify the Gauge works.
Think of the Voltage as the speed and the Amperage as the power.
