I am going to use a 55 272 with a 62 COM and flywheel so can I use the starter that came with the 272 and FOM or will I have to find a 62 starter.

Starters are the same from 1956 thru 1964 for the Y.  1954-1955 were six volt but otherwise the same.  Even the 1958 thru 1964 starters for the FE engines will interchange with the Y starters.

I know the starter that came with the 272 works and not sure if its for 6 or 12 volts,I do have one from a 57 but its been laying in a shed since the early 70s.

6 Volt Starters will work on 12 Volts and may last for Years depending on Starter Condition.

My 55 TBird was converted to 12 volts before I purchased it.  It still has it's original 6 volt starter.  It's been rebuilt at least once that I know of.  I works just fine.

just had a 6volt apart, compared to 12volt the big diff is 12volt has a 3rd coil pack thats to slow the 12volt a bit,the rest is the same. the 3rd coil pack is wired direct to the power bar
