Hello I helped a friend install a timing chain today, after installing there was about 1/2 inch of deflection on each side of the chain . I do not remember the maker of the part but it seemed a bit loose . The engine is stock with no modifications to the crank or cam. Other chains I have installed I seem to remember just a bit more snug. Thanks as always in advance .

If the block has been align bored, the chain could be looser. Did you change the gears too? If not, the gears could be worn.

Assuming that the block has not been align honed or align bored several times, this just sounds like a poor quality timing set. I’ll suggest getting another timing chain set and preferably another brand and try again. Always use chains and gears as matched sets and don’t piece meal them together from individual pieces.

Both gears and chain were changed the engine was never bored I think I will try to make him get another chain I was just not happy with the slack

i ran into that once about 1/2 in slack.i wonder if theres such a thing as a faulty block
