I’ve been lucky enough to actually find the Thunderbird specific oil pan on some of the big truck Y engine cores I get from the truck salvage yards. Not sure why the T-Bird pans would have been on those engines but one guess is that they were replacement engines and some of those Ford dealerships that were doing those replacements used the Thunderbird pans rather than the normal truck rear sump pans. it's a rare occurrence on the big truck engines but they are out there.

Ted, how do you tell the difference between a T-Bird rear sump and any other rear sump oil pan? I have one that I have no idea what it is supposed to fit. Some thirty years ago, I was given two 292 yblock engines that had rear sump oil pans on them. I rebuilt both of them and sold one with the rear sump pan to a guy needing one for a 1956 F100. The other, I put in my 1955 Fairlane using the front sump off the original 272 Y. Thus, I still have the rear sump pan and don't know exactly what it fits. Probably truck, but possibly not. Thanks.

A T-bird pan is real thin at the front with a significant increase in depth at the sump portion. It very clearly steps down to the sump. There are two truck pans and both are more or less wedge shaped although each does drop down slightly to the sump. There is a thread here with a picture showing all 3 that I can try to find later but if I'm being even halfway clear, it should be obvious by looking.

Another thing to check is the oil pump tube mount, for three bolts (truck), drain plug is not 1/2"-20 threads, but larger, then you definitely have a truck pan. Joe-JDC

Thanks to Charlie, Brent, and Joe, I know my pan is definitely a truck pan - not Tbird.
