It's been a while since I assembled a Y Block. I have the short block assembled and the cam degreed. I used a roller timing chain. The cam timing is perfect. I installed the front engine cover today and the oil slinger looks odd compared to the FE motors I have worked on in the past. What does this part do in a Y Block? Is it suppose to turn or is it there to deflect oil away from the crank seal. Do I have it installed right?

The oil slinger stops oil from blowing out the front seal. The oil slinger should be keyed and ride on the crank NOT spin around it. And and and it should NOT be touching the front cover. Hope that helps.

But it is realty not going to be locked in place till the balancer is installed. The slinger gets pinched between the gear and the snout of balancer

I'm not sure if the slinger is on the key. When I put the slinger on the crank in front of the gear, it didn't look like the key was long enough to contact it. I think the roller crank gear is wider. I can see how the balancer would hold it in place. Right now the slinger is touching the front cover. Can I assume when I install the balancer it will hold it away from the front cover?

Assuming the oil slinger is not bent or distorted, it will ride at approximately 1/16 to 1/8” from the timing cover when the damper is tightened down against it. While the slinger is keyed to go over the ¼” key in the crankshaft, it is not key held when tightened down. I typically just take the key slot in the oil slinger and insure it’s not over a crank gear key slot when I tighten the damper to insure there’s not a direct oil path from the crankshaft gear to the harmonic damper slot.

In you photo, is the red material an adhesive of some type that is holding the slinger in place?
