Does anyone know if it’s possible to lubricant the floor shift linkage on a 1955 Thunderbird 3 speed? I know there is a grease fitting on it but can’t seem to find it.

312YBlock. On the 3 speed floor shifter used in the 'Bird, there is a steel shaft that the shifter is supported by just below the shifter boot. That shaft also supports the lever arms that the floor shifter manual transmission rods connect to. On the drivers side of the support shaft there is a grease fitting that screws into the end of the round shaft and has a 90 degree downward facing grease fitting connection. The grease fitting is accessed from directly under the floor shifter. Look for the sheet metal bracket that supports the shifter support shaft on the bottom side of the shifter assembly. On the driver's side of the sheet metal bracket there is a round opening that provides the access hole for the grease gun nozzle. You'll need a light to see the grease fitting sitting directly above the bracket opening!

Thank you very much for responding. I reassembled the car in 1985 after getting the frame and body back from the shop. I remember greasing the fitting but could not remember its position and thought it un-serviceable. Shifting has become stiff and that has to be the reason.

Some grease on the lugs that engage the rod levers, and the rod ends also wouldn’t hurt.
