Dexron II or III whatever the latest update is for Dextron is the replacement for Type A. .. Type F is not suggested as the replacement for Type A. That's regarding an existing Transmission. If U are going with a rebuilt ask the Supplier what they recommend.

Thanks! You just verified some of my other research earlier and elsewhere. I consider this site the most reliable!

What is wrong with type "F" I've been using it in my 63 Cruse-0-matic for the last 10 years.

Dexron will absorb the heat better but F series oil has an additive that is to protect the seals and clutches! If your transmission does not need F type Oil
Dexron is a better choice. C4 and C6 Transmissions made during the 1960's needed F type oil. Ford quit using F type oil When catalectic converters were cooking the transmission's oil. Any modern rebuild will replace the parts necessary so the Transmission's that needed F type can use Dexron!

Was Type "F" not the recommended Fluid in 1963 for that Transmission? The replacement for A is Dexron.

"Ford first produced its own transmission fluid formulation in 1967, referred to as Type F or Type FA. The name comes from Ford’s specification number for the fluid, ESW M2C33-F. This fluid was used in all Ford transmissions until 1977 and most Ford transmissions until 1980."
HEMMINGS - https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2015/03/16/tech-101-automatic-transmission-fluid-part-one-american-manufacturers/
TYPE F was developed to use with asbestos material clutch discs. When asbestos was banned by the government, FORD formulated to other fluid(s).

I bought a case of "A" on Amazon to service my 56 transmission. Replaced the Ford-O with a Cruise-O so I'll probably end up selling at a swap meet. You can still get A if you so choose.I was told to use Mercon ll in the new one..Good Luck.
