A little bit (lot of) transmission problems and one blown head gasket but one easy 8.2s with only 26 psi of boost.

The moment, when you realize that something is wrong... Head gasket has failed and you have to pull to the side of the track. This happened at the burn out and luckily it was on the left side track and left bank gasket. Waters were easy to clean from the track...

Nice shot from the first race of this season. This coming weekend will be next event for us to chase WR run.
By LordMrFord - 6 Years Ago
In last race there was one 8.2s with lowish boost, mediocre 60 feet and slipping converter.
Now converter got higher stall speed and track is not cold anymore thanks to over four weeks of sunshine. Smile
Feels good...again.

I had a great weekend with the Y-Block guys in Ohio. Started with 16.4sec quarters. I tried manually shifting the AOD but that wasn't working well so I tried letting the transmission shift itself. First round I dialed in a 16 and ran a 14.9 at 92mph! Lucky for me the other car red lighted. Next pass was 15.11sec and I lifted in the traps thinking I was running too fast. The Hoosier Hurricane got me, barely. He ran a 12.83 on a 12.80 dial in. So I made him work for it!
Now the bad/good part. I had a over heating problem with my tow vehicle. Changed thermostat, then the radiator and fan clutch. Each change it would run cool for about 30 miles then HOT. Finally settled on a blown head gasket or cracked head. Either way I was done so I found a local car guy and left it with him to fix. Had no success in finding a car rental so I unloaded the 56 and drove it home. 800 miles with no problems and just under 18mpg! I couldn't be happier with the engine.

So Chuck, is that 14.9 @ 92 mph your best ever run? You're not in our drag times list, but you sure should be there...
By MoonShadow - 6 Years Ago
It is my best ever run to date. I was actually in the 16's before. Not a Y-Block record by far but a personnel best.

Sounds like a road movie plot with happy ending. Smile

Sort of. Now its your turn.
By LordMrFord - 6 Years Ago
No happy endings here.
Two worn out connecting rod bearings and no oil pressure in first pull.
8.269 s / 160 mph though.

By MoonShadow - 6 Years Ago
Dam'n! Those bearing don't look good. Hope you can save the crank shaft. And with all that you're still going fast. Sort it out and see some 7's soon.
By Ted - 6 Years Ago
Any idea what happened with the oil pressure?

Have you tried ‘colder’ spark plugs?  Based on the porcelain length of the pictured plugs, those look plenty 'hot' for the amount of boost you are running.
By LordMrFord - 6 Years Ago
The best quest now is that distributor gear pin snapped in burnout.
Because distributor itself dont distribute our sparks, engine doesnt shutdown and keeps running without oil pressure.

Ten penny part might do some serious damage!

It might be possible that some bearing metal runned trough oil pump and snapped the pin but that needs some autopsy.

We tried to change that bearing in last night but didnt help. There is something else wrong still.

Have check that spark plug thing but there was one lean spot in fuel map in 4000rpm/6psi what might be the reason.

I thought y'all had a crank trigger.  Is that on one of the other vehicles?
By Hollow Head - 6 Years Ago
Crankshaft seems to be okay after polishing three of four bearing surfaces slightly with wet paper. All rod bearing changed and oil pump checked and seems to be ok too. There was some minor scratches so something small has gone through. Now biggest problem is to find new gear for distributor as old is cracked. Would something from SBF family work? We have no spares as we have had one similar issue while back ago. Or anywhere were we could find new for Y-block?http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/40f41671-c638-408c-abbc-1b73.jpg

Stickers say that we have done a lots of hard abusing for stock forged crank and we are still using the same one from the beginning. It has survived two rod twisting accidents etc. Well over 200 runs and counting... Next event 28Th of June to 1st of July, so we have to hurry with that distributor gear...

Empty distributor is only for rotating the oil pump.
By MoonShadow - 6 Years Ago
Just a thought. Of course its only money!

Chuck, if you think it's only money, I suspect you're willing to sponsor that for us... rightBigGrinBigGrin? And it won't be that 1400+ dollars to get it up here and for the next event...
By MoonShadow - 6 Years Ago
I looked at the pump not the price. WOW! Those pumps are expensive. Maybe a google search would turn up some better deals? Good luck.
By charliemccraney - 6 Years Ago
There are oil pressure switches that can be used to turn off the engine if pressure drops.

Aren't y'all using megasquirt?  There might be a way to program that to shut things down if pressure drops below a certain threshold and notify you so that it is less of a mystery once you start investigating.
By Hollow Head - 6 Years Ago
Charlie, we have exactly what you said. Wonder why it didn't shut down the engine. SIMOOOO!!!w00tCrazyCrying

We had only one datalogged launch with oil pressure curve and zero pressure was calibrated 26 psi off. Upper pressure is not calibrated yet.
So didnt turn it on because I didnt want to ruin launch with oil pressure miscalibration. 😣

It was a short season. Sad

We need start to think about someshort of girdle.
By Ted - 6 Years Ago
Ouch!  I’ve seen that before.  Here are a couple of options.

I really like the looks of the side bolt setup.
By LordMrFord - 6 Years Ago
Looks like a we try to weld our blocks together. (Both splitted)
I look forward how welded block takes the abuse.
There is nothing to lose (if big bang dont come to visit) I presume if failure happens, it might be only slipped cam bearing and lost oil pressure again so with WORKING LOW OIL PRESSURE SHUTDOWN risks are minimized.
By Cliff - 6 Years Ago
Are there no blocks in Finland? what does it cost to ship one from the US?, I have a customer in Sweden that has Y Block stuff is that close to you?
By LordMrFord - 6 Years Ago
Yes we have couple of good block still spare but those two cracked are already machined to fit the pistons and straightened decks.
Our machinist(thanks to awesome https://fi-fi.facebook.com/PpAutokoneistus/ Wink who are also our sponsor might not like when we destroy blocks in every other race and welding is faster than machining whole block so we might get engine ready in race after next. Finnish summer is short and not-so-snowy like they say.

Shipping cost might be several hundreds if we want fast delivery. Otherwise block is here in autumn.
