There is a 1/2 thick adaptor on the intake manifold.  Does the Holly 4000 T-pot need an adaptor under it?  What is the purpose of the adaptor, anyway?  Can I mount the carb directly on the thin gasket that came with it?

Picture or the intake manifold casting numbers will help to answer your question.

If it is an adapter installed on a 4 barrel manifold, then the T-pot will very likely mount directly to the manifold.  The adapter is probably there to fit a more modern carburetor.

Is the spacer metal or wood/plastic? They serve to keep the heat from the intake away from the carburetor. Look up Phenolic spacers on Google.

Are you sure it is an adapter? I use either a 1/2" or 3/8" phenolic spacer under 4000't-pot or any other carb for that matter. If is an adapter it will be for a larger base carb. A 55 used multiple gaskets as I remember and a 56 used a single. Can't remember why.

U R correct. It is a spacer.  Looks like multiple spacers/gaskets that are stapled together to accumulate 1/2 inch.  Should I run the TPOT w/o spacer?

It is a spacer, the exact size of the bottom of the TPOT.  So i'll keep it there.  Cant hurt anything unless it loses vacuum.

That was the factory spacer for the 55 T-Birds.  I replaced the one on mine with a 1/4 phenolic spacer since the gaskets that were stapled together were starting to deteriorate too much.  The phenolic spacer helps keep the carb cooler than the stock cast intake.
