What is acceptable up and down movement of a y block distributor shaft.

Paul I believe it is listed in the Shop Manual in the Specifications Section.

End Play with Dist. removed from Engine- .022-.030. With Dist. installed in Engine .004-.020.

Its best to work at minimizing the movement - to the low end of allowable. When there is lots of freeplay, you can see the timing hunt as the shaft moves up and down on the gear helix. As the engine accelerates and decelerates it climbs and falls.

I had to correct the Endplay in One I bought about 8 Years ago. A new rebuilt from Carcone. If I remember right is was about .100 End Play which is far more than Specs. I think Mr. Gasket sells a shim Kit with 3-4 Shims of various thickness.
