I have found two or three of these things in an engine gasket set for  Yblock.  What are they for?

Looks like John is right.  Saw this on the Facebook Y-Block Group.  Looks like a cast iron rear main seal retainer.  EBU can be seen cast into the side.  Seems like a much better overall design.  I wonder if it was eliminated becase of a problem or possibly only cost cutting.

That would probably add a little bit of strength to the rear seal area. My engine has all steel main caps and I think this type of rear seal holder would compliment them.
