Assuming your damper is good, using that indication along with the thumb method, or pulling the valve cover to see that both valves are closed is easiest.

Maybe consider using a piston stop as this will also allow you to determine correct balancer indexing at the same time?
If you know the indexing is correct, they make a whistle to replace the spark plug and it will stop whistling @ TDC.

Of course regarding the Y, the dist is set off CYL #6, correct? TDC CYL #1 first to determine balancer indexing and then move to #6.
Advanced CRS...

You can install the distributor with any cylinder at TDC on compression as long as you know which cylinder and ensure that the rotor is pointing to the corresponding terminal. With the limited markings on a stock damper, #1 and #6 are easiest.

I recently bought a dial indicator with a extended stem and adapter to thread in the spark plug hole. I haven't had a chance to try it yet but it should be a quick and easy way to confirm tdc.
