They definitely won't work. 1955 and earlier are 6-volt positive ground, while 1956 and later are 12-volt negative ground. The two will not interchange.

The starter and horns were the only thing I didn't change when I converted my 55 bird to 12 v neg grd 17 years ago. They work fine. I don't know how long they'd last if you laid on them for a long time.
