Found this cover shot of the March issue on the Hot Rod Magazine site. This makes two years straight now that the Y has taken a first place in the Engine Masters Challenge Vintage Engine class and also been the focus of the cover on Hot Rod Magazine.

I still have a series of articles that i think were in Car Craft back in the '70's or '80's on building a Y Block. They were less than enthused as i recall and the end result was less than spectacular. The engines could be made to run a lot better than what they came up with at the time. Nice to see them get the respect today that they deserve. Been driving one since '63 and they always ran as well as or better than other cars in the same class.

slumlord : I think the articles you reference too were in Popular Hot Rodding around 1970-71. Unfortunately, they messed up & gave our favorite engine an undeserved black eye. That subject has been covered some here previously & a subsequent testing of Tri-Power intake manifolds, by our moderater Ted Eaton, gave a good look at what mainly went wrong with their build up. The primary issue was that they chose to use an untested "Offenhauser intake". In Ted's much later tests of 7 of that style of intake, the Offy, unfortunately finished dead last!. If anyone's interested that test info is I believe available on the Ted Eaton Balancing website..

Thanks Ted, Now when I tell people I have a Y-Block Ford in my car they say you mean like the one on the cover of Hot Rod ! Then they ask if it makes that kind of horsepower, and then of course I tell a little white lie and say O sure it does !! Larry

Larry Short (1/9/2017) Thanks Ted, Now when I tell people I have a Y-Block Ford in my car they say you mean like the one on the cover of Hot Rod ! Then they ask if it makes that kind of horsepower, and then of course I tell a little white lie and say O sure it does !! Larry Larry. Don’t sell your supercharged engines’ output too short. Randy Gummelt’s supercharged 345 incher in his dragster was making in excess of 750HP. Granted that engine had 15 pounds of boost and was on injected alcohol but it was still 7½:1 compression.

My pure stock F code (McCullough) made 377 through the stock manifolds and Flowmasters. It was lean because that fuel pump could not keep up and it had sucked the fuel bowl dry. No longer a problem. So imagine with more displacement, better flowing heads, more cam, and headers. Larry has the potential for a serious amount of HP.

While I can't say that mine makes as much horsepower, I am running the same heads and its the same basic engine. Proud to see confirmation that the Y Block is a great engine design.

There will probably be more in the next issue of Engine Masters Magazine. That should be out towards the end of the month.
