My 56 ,Mercury, I needed to replace wire harness, I decided to replace with I call one wire at a time, it has worked real well,. I had 53 Victoria, someone had used a premade harness, I ended up redoing most of it. I learned a lot. I decided next time I would make my own one wire at a time, that way I knew where each went in case I needed to find a problem. I put my fuse blocks under the hood on the fender well. I think this is the to go.

If you're looking for a replacement OEM style harness most of the usual suspect old Ford parts suppliers have them, Mac's, Dearborn Classics, Dennis Carpenter, etc. Not cheap, though because there are many sub harnesses you'll need if you're doing a complete rewire. Unless you're concerned about originality you might be better off using an aftermarket kit such as Ron Francis, Painless, EZ Wire, etc.

Depends on what you want, a restoration or a modern system. I've used a couple American Auto wire systems, they're expensive, but very complete with lots of extra terminals and wires. I don't know what car you have, so they may or may not make a kit for it. I did my 55 Tbird with a Centec kit, using the panel with the turn and flasher relays included. They use set screws on the panel end, but they haven't been a problem, and you can make your own decision what goes where.
If you're adding components, radios, p/w's, seats, etc. the modern kits have an advantage. More connections and options. The wires are also printed with where they go every 6" or so. You can also go to someone like Restoration Specialties and find period correct wire and terminals to build your own.
When I do a car from scratch, I lay out a wiring board on cardboard on the floor. Plan my routing, firewall penetrations, etc. Every hour you spend planning will save two hours on the install. Make a drawing and keep it, so you can trouble shoot it later if you need to.

In regard to complete wiring harnesses, is there a company that makes one for a 1955 Ford Fairlane that is obviously head and shoulders above all others when it comes to correctness, completeness, quality, ease of use, and general overall fitment? I am planning a complete replacement of all the wiring in my Ford and want it to be totally functional and as original as possible, while at the same time, be a labor of love rather than miserable frustration! Thanks.

As Miker stated, it depends whether you want a duplication of the wiring harness you already have for a pure "restoration" or if you want a modern, replacement which also includes a pre wired fuse block for your main and accessory circuits. Remember, the factory harness only has 1 fuse, if I'm not mistaken, located in the light switch. Some modern aftermarket harnesses are make and model specific, but very few are for mid 50's Fords. Other aftermarket wiring harnesses such as "Painless", Ron Francis", "It's a Snap", "EZ" and others are sold by the number of circuits you need. Almost all of the aftermarket, pre-made wiring harnesses in addition to the pre-wired fuse block, have each wire named as to where it goes. This is a huge benefit in my book and makes wiring much easier as long as you take your time.
