Trying to start my 1955 F-100 239 Y-block (now in my Hot Rod), and the starter motor (12V) kicks out before the engine can start. Having trouble starting the engine so it doesn't start right off and actually hasn't started yet, but almost. Then the starter motor kicks out and whirrs. What can I do to fix this, any ideas from you very smart and talented guys?

I stopped it by getting a mini starter

I remember every one of my old Dad's y blocks starting that way years and years ago I just think it is normal for them

As slumlord brings up, look at the bendix. Replacing just the bendix with a new one will eliminate the early disengagement.

I've experienced the same problem on my 57 car. So, another possible factor is that your battery voltage is somewhat low.
