I lost a lifter like that last year. Found the pieces in the pan. No abnormal wear on the pieces, or any of the other lifters, or other lobes. 7 years, 6000 miles, not over 5000 rpm. Figured it was a freak failure. Sure took that lobe out though.

What lifters are you using?
Those are Comp Cams lifters and cam is Schneider. Engine is runned few hours. Starter didnt work properly when I got engine ready and there was maybe too much starting in the beginning. Head gasket also blew sortly after break in and engine was full of water.

There has to be a couple of camshaft lobes that are far from pretty with lifters looking like that. Ouch. One of Randy Gummelts’ engines broke the head off the tappet like that and the root cause was traced back to the pushrod being too large in diameter and was rubbing within the pushrod hole in the cylinder head.

I have to double check that pushrod thing.

Hi, have you used Trend Tool Steel lifters?

Trend tool steel lifters tend to be the best and worth the investment. Been there done that and don't need to say no more!

if steel lifters are the best what about ford early steel lifters.

Trend's might be good but cost over four cam regrouds + few cheaper lifters in here, other side of planet so if pulling engine off and back again dont start to bother me too much, I try to go cheaper way first.
I think dragster got Comp lifters also, huge spring pressures and over three times more power than my engine and got now first cam failure after hundreds of cam rocking quarter mile pulls, problem might not be lifters but me.
But thanks for the advises again. Now I'm a little bit wiser and recognize my faults better.

Be sure to check the tappet stem diameters. There are lifters out there that do not have adequate oil clearance within their bores. Any stems measuring greater than 0.4990” on a Y can pose a problem in being too tight within the lifter bores. If they do not turn freely when at operating temperatures, then lobe/tappet failures will take place. This is simply one more thing to check when assembling an engine. "Assume nothing".

Lifters are 0.4975-0.498"

When Mummert first wrote about them, sometime back, I went to Trends site & didn't find anything about them either.. Possibly the're a special order item? They have a part number listed in the price sheet, FYBL, but when put into the search nothing comes up. So I don't know if they no longer make them or if they can be special ordered, maybe a phone call would be better?
