I have been trying to find correct speedometer driven gear for my 1954 ford-o-matic.  I have tried two different gears but they seem too small in diameter and do not make contact with drive gear.   Could somebody please help me get the right gear, a picture, a part number or any info, that could help,  I may also have wrong cable, it is type with retainer clip to hold gear on,   Any help will be greatly appreciated.   Bill

Check the parts suppliers for the gear.  I know the TBird suppliers have a selection of the correct 54-56 gears.

Check ebay - look for "1954 Speedometer gear".  I took a quick look and saw two for sale.

I have tried the slide on gear and it worked going forward but as soon as I put car in reverse, backing up caused gear to be pulled off of cable.  There is no stop on far side of tail housing to prevent gear from  falling off.  There has to be way to lock gear on cable,  or the housing is wrong one. Not sure.  Paul, are you positive it is slide type.  Mac`s catalog shows slide gears but says they are not for ford-o-matic.

If You think the Transmission has been changed to a 57 and later style the 57 and up Cable will fit the 56 Speedo Head. The 57 and later Cable uses the retaining Clip  to retain Gear on the end of the Cable. you just need to find a Cable as close in Length to Yours. Ford did change to different Style at some point where the Cable just clips to the Speed Head instead of threading on. You want One that threads onto Speedo Head.   I believe the length you need would  be around 64-66 Inches. The Standard Transmission Ones are longer.I have the Fordomatic in mine and as long as I get the end of the Cable into the Transmission without the Gear falling off It works fine.

oldcarmark is correct - if you have a 57/58 Fordo or the 59 and later Fordo (2 speed) then the cable you have is correct and you need the later, clip on gear.  Lots of these around, go to ebay and you will see loads.

The later Fordo's are water cooled.  They came in mid year 56.  I believe they still had the slide in gear until the 57 model year but not sure of this.

49-56  they were the slide in Gear with Standard or Fordomatic. In 57 they changed to the better idea with the Clip. Cables from 57 till they changed them where they attach to Speedo Head will work on most Applications using the Gear with the Clip. Just get the correct Length You need.

The cable I`m using threads onto speedo and has  type of gear that clips on.  Problem is the gear is not big enough around to properly engage with drive gear in transmission, which is a new gear.  Does anyone know if they make a gear that has larger diameter so that it will engage with drive gear.  All the gears I have looked at do not tell you specs such as diameter of teeth section of gear, so that is the problem.  Thanks guys for your input it helps to find the solution.

Have you tried an original type Cable with the original style Gear that does not use the Clip or have You just been trying to use the Original Style Gear on the newer Style Cable? The reason I ask is You said that when you use the old style Gear without a clip it works in drive but falls off in Reverse. You can't mix the 2 together- Old style gear and new style Cable.

I used the original type cable(new) and used the slide on gear which engaged drive gear and was ok going forward but when going in reverse the gear is pulled off .  I think there should be a stop on opposite side of housing to prevent it coming off like in a manual tran  smission.  I was told to go to clip on gear but noticed they are not as big around as the slide on  one that engages but won`t stay on.   So if I could find a larger diameter clip on gear, I think I would be in business,  By the way I used a different cable for the retainer  type gear.   Hope you can make some sense out of this. I understand what You are explaining. You have tried both types of Cables and Gears. Not sure what to suggest. Is there a ID Tag on that Transmission?
Usually riveted on side of Case.

I have just fitted a Fordo to my Aust 58. It was an oil cooled box but has the speedo drive on the top of the box not underneath like the one that was originally in my 55. It needed the late model clip on gear which incidentally has gear cut opposite direction to account for being on top of the gearbox speedo drive. All the speedo gears I have are roughly the same diameter, whether the old push on gear or the clip on regardless of the direction of the teeth cut on the gear.

The only number I could find was on tailstock housing, MS5X7,which is stamped into side of housing.  I ordered gear for 1957 Ford  so will see where that leads .    Bill
