Hello does anyone know of a shop in the NY Long Island area that will rebuild a transmission for a 1963 Ford Fairlane for a fair price thanks in advance.

Haft the expense of having a trans rebuilt is taking out and putting it back in the car.

I took it out called a guy he told me 600 when I brought it to him after he inspected it he told me 2000

Did you ask for the reasoning for the price difference?  It could be justified.  If enough is wrong, a transmission can certainly cost $2000 to rebuild.

The car was running I was just looking to freshen up the tranny since I was rebuilding the engine .

I understand that it may be running, but that doesn't automatically mean that the transmission is in good condition.

Case and point, a couple years ago I had the T5 in my Firebird rebuilt because of a pilot bearing failure.  It, too seemed to be functioning fine but when they got it apart, it was simply worn out.  I saw the parts, and agreed.  Since it was out, and apart, I opted to have it completely rebuilt.  Could it have been reassembled as it was? absolutely.  Would it have lasted a while longer?  Most likely.  Would it have been the best call to simply have it reasembled?  Since labor is the majority of the cost and it was already apart, no.

So did they give you a reason for the price increase?  Or did they just change the price without even looking at the transmission?

If he original quoted $ 600 and when you brought it in it became $2000 I would run away from this guy. Call around and try to get several written estimates with price breakdowns and a guarantee in writing. If you  take out and install $600 WITH a rebuilt torque converter is about right. Pete

You didnt say if it was stick or auto either, I'd trust a stick to be rebuilt right at a lot more places than i'd trust one of these old automatics. I'm still trying to find a local guy to give a freshening up on a b+m hydro i have.
