Y-guys:    I just got through putting an Explorer rear axle in my '60 F-100.

I ground off the factory spring mounts, slid it(the housing)under the springs

and placed the new spring perches on top of the housing, centered

it, adjusted the pinion angle with an angle finder, then spot welded

the perches and re-checked everything before the final weld.

I was replacing the driveshaft anyway, so I had the correct yoke

added.  I had to fab a small angle piece to hold the emergency brake

cable and re-shape the hyd. brake line a fuzz.

I used a wheel with 3 1/2 in backspace, although you could proabably

           use 4 1/2 B.S and a small wheel spacer 7/32 or so

For your info, these rear ends are plentiful in u-pull's and are

very strong. Most will have 3.73,4.10,3.08 and many have trac-lok

from the factory. If you go looking, on the tag if there is an "L"

after the first digit, its got a trac-lok. (ex. 3L73)  Hope this

helps someone out there in "Y" Land...... Bill

ONE small detail, the bolt pattern is 5 on 4 1/2  so you

have to use a wheel adapter to keep the big bolt circle that

is stock.( I was changing my front to 5 on 41/2 anyway so...)

I hope you have better luck than I had with the 8.8.If you tow with your F-100,be VERY careful and light on the throttle!I broke the carrier bearing castings right out of the case on one, swapped in a brand new 8.8,drum to drum made for a Lightening, that lasted about a year until it broke the carrier at the pass. side bearing. One thing you need to remember is the 8.8 is built for a Mustang and widened to fit trucks but that is all Ford did to it.I had a 94 F-150,5.8,towing my racecar on an open trailer, total weight was 4200lbs.I know lots of guys use them on quick racecars but I don't trust them.
