I was recently tuning up my 56 merc 312 and found out the hard way that I had purchased a defective condenser. How do you test a condenser to know if it is okay? PS I put in the old one and car started right up and runs perfect

Bad replacement condensers are all too common these days. Since very few, if any, modern vehicles use them they're made offshore to keep production costs down. Unfortunately quality control in some plants is nil. Anyway, to answer your question see the graphic below. You'll need a digital multimeter.

Not as a complaint but I went thru this twice before installing a Pertronics. I still carry the stock parts and tools to replace it but I'm very happy with the electronic installation. I still use the ballast resister with the new system. Good Luck.
