I am buying a 55 with a 272 in it. My son has heads off of a 56 - 292 bird. is there a difference?

They should be different but after more than 60 years, anything can be installed and there is only one way to know. You have to look at the numbers.

Welcome to the site.
Click the link below for a page of cylinder head information provided by John Mummert. In reviewing all of the page, you'll have a handle on the original supplied cylinder heads for the different years, and in many cases the combustion chamber volumes and the compression ratios when they were used on particular cubic inch displacement engines as advertised by FoMoCo.

Hope this helps.
