Float Arm direction '57 T-Bird Fuel Tank Sender?

Which way does the fuel tank level sensor in a '57 Thunderbird tank point.  Does the float swing towards the rear of the car or front? 
There is a tab on the sender and a notch on the tank, but they don't intersect and prevent the sender from turning.

I asked my Dad's opinion.   He mounts them sideways so that the gauge does not fluctuate as much going up or down hills.  I think that is the route I'm going, as the tank is pretty flat and level when in the car and that would make it the most stable.

           I agree with Dad. Plus there's  more room for the arm to swing that way
