Gentleman, I'm in the middle of rewiring my 56 Mecury  montclair. Where does the engine  ground strap attach to the block and where  does it attach to the fire wall? It has the original 312 y block. Than You in advance.

I use one of the two bolt holes into the block next to the water temp sensor and drivers side plug wire bracket. There is a stud or bolt on the firewall to attach it to. Be sure to scrape off some paint to insure a good connection.

Unless this is a concours restoration, you might run a couple extra grounds up to the instrument cluster and back to the tail light assemblies. Old body joints, rust, dirt etc, sometimes the ground path isn't what it used to be. Gas guage sending units are a common problem on the ground side.

On the Ford cars, I find the ground strap attached to the driver’s side cylinder head right behind the intake manifold.  Be sure that bolt is not too long as it can contact the pushrod and bend it if too long.  The other end of the ground strap is attached to the rear firewall with a self tapping metal screw.

Where about do you put the battery ground on the block? Is there an optimum spot?

There was also a ground strap frome the back of the front crossmember to the engine steady rest. I have used the dipstick tube bolt for the battery ground.
