I was just wondering if the generator on a 1955 and 1956 have the same output and just the regulator is changed to to make 6 or 12 volts .

You need a 12 volt Generator and Regulator. Of course You can always change to a 12 Volt Alternator.

I have seen a "6" volt generator put out over 12 volts on a test bench but the class I was taking at that time said it was not a good idea. I don't remember why maybe it was the voltage regulator that was the problem.. When I worked for Sears installing batteries in 1962-3 we did install 8 volt batteries in some hard starting Oldsmobiles mostly. We were able to adjust the voltage regulator to keep the battery charged. Funny thing is when they had light bulb problems we put in 12 v bulbs and they worked just fine and were plenty bright. Good Luck.

I also put a 8 Volt battery in an old 51 Cadillac from a local battery company. I had no idea Sears did that. As a young kid just learning about cars it took me for ever to figure out why it was so hard to crank when cold but started fine when hot..

It was not normal for Sears. I worked with a guy there who did things on the sly. He had them get the 8v battery and he would reset the regulator and have the receipt say no warrentee. Sears want us to replace starters and everything; it was normally a pretty worn out car which the customer just wanted to last a while longer. He taught me a lot as long as I would go under the cars and replace starters. I was 18/19, what did I know.

The 51 caddy belonged to a friends mother, she was single and poor. I took the battery to the battery shop on my bicycle. I was about 15 at the time, to have it rebuilt, people actually did this before we became a throw away society. They said the battery was good but they were the ones that recommended the 8V. After we got it started she drove it back to the shop and they adjusted the regulator for her.
