Hello Y Block experts.
I'm having a problem with the horn on my 55 Victoria. It will randomly "Honk" when driving down the road, and it's a bit embarrassing.
The insulator isn't factory style, it's a piece of plastic lid which someone must have put in there at some point. Is this likely to cause the random honks or is there something else I can check or adjust?

I am not familiar with the steering wheel hardware on a 55 but I remember having a similar issue on a 56. I think they all use the steering wheel contacts to ground the horn relay, so if there is a bare spot on that wire that comes up thru the column then it will cause what you describe. I'm sure this is not the only possibility, but it happened to me a long time ago.

Nothing worse than an intermittent problem, and chiggerfarm brings up a good point. If it happens often enough to troubleshoot, I'd start by disconnecting the wire at the horn relay. If that cures it, I'd disconnect the wire at the horn contact and tape it off, then reconnect at the relay. If that stops it, replace the plastic lid with the right parts. If not, replace the wire down the steering shaft.
This assumes you're comfortable driving without the horn, and willing to go thru all this. Otherwise, just replace the contact assembly, and replace the wire at the same time. That's what I'd do if disconnecting the relay solves it. Find a local hot rod shop, and buy the good wire. The junk at the auto parts store probably won't live long inside the shaft.

On those lines, I put an Ididit column in my roadster. Brand new off the shelf tilt setup. I can't hook up the horn because it honks when I turn the wheel. It uses a late model scrub plugin so the horn wire is external once its passed the tilt. Haven't found the source yet.

Thanks fellas for your assistance, I reckon it may be the horn wire. I'll order one up with the insulator, spring etc and see how it works out.
