It seems that almost all of the new wheel cylinders are of foreign mfg. With this in mind, what determines whether a cylinder is rebuildable. I've never done it, but if I can and the cylinder are rebuildable, I'd rather do that as opposed to the new China/whatever stuff. Any suggestions from anyone that's done it? Good idea or not? Thanks Jim

I just rebuilt the cyl on my 63 galaxie, i must have rebuilt a 100 in my lifetime, easy and cheap, but you need a good wheel cyl hone with coarse and fine stones. (about $30.00 or $10.00 used at a flee market)

A wheel cylinder is usually re buildable if it's not extremely worn or does not have deep pitting.

If the cylinders are badly pitted or have been rebuilt so many times that the bores are no longer true, then the cylinders can be bored and sleeved back to the original size.

There is a place near me that not only sleeves wheel cyls, they also sleeve master cyls with stainless steel.
Do that and they'll last nearly forever!!

You can hone the cylinders on the car if you have the Lisle flexible hone , cheap easy. You will soon see if the cylinders are that bad.. http://www.lislecorp.com/divisions/products/?product=1

The cost of replacing wheel cylinders is so low that most supply out lets don't even sell the parts to rebuild old cylinders any more, To get the rebuild parts all the shops in my area have to special order them!

Howdy Rowen! Yeah....it's still in pieces all over the shop! I have some pictures of that though! I have been moving very slowly in the last several years because of work and other projects but I am going to retire in the next year or so and things (I hope) will happen pretty fast!

Tanks fer gettin back to me Rick. Aahhhhh.......retirement......sigh....about 3 more yrs for me....so sum pics of yer F600 project would still interest me. I don't have room or,frankly, the desire for anything that big, but I still think they are WAY kool!! You could PM them or start a new thread rather than hijack Kahuna's. Don't mind at all. Just looking for more info all the time. As far as rebuilding vs new, my experience lately is that while new stuff is new, many times the bleeder screws are now metric, which is a PITA to me, and actually pisses me off no end as to why they can't be made correctly. I also have concerns about China wheel cylinders (although they may be of Bendix or Raybestos brands), as I expressed in one of my other posts. So, if we hone a used U.S.A. original wheel cylinder - where do we get the rubber parts? The composition of the rubber is critical to its quality. Do we get the rubber from China, or from NOS. If NOS, what about its age. Age also causes the rubber (elastomers) to degrade. These are just questions I have. Don't know if there are any good answers.

Unfortunately today we are stuck with no other suppliers for some of our replacement parts. I had to replace the two rear wheel cylinders on my 60 truck with Chinese made. One bleeder was metric the other was US, that was five years ago and I'm still pissed. So far the cylinders have held up well.

Gee, how many times are you going to have to bleed it! Move with the times guys and gets some Chinese parts and use some Metric spanners "Merica" needs to move into this century and discover millimetres are easy

But metric is SO un-American. LOL! Besides it's no fun climbing under a car with two sets of tools..., maybe I should change all the hardware on my sixty over to the,,. Oh never mind.

I imagine all the Canadians have given up arguing with you US guys about the advantages of the metric system.
Much easier to measure 359mm than 1 ft 2 9/64 in and a lot easier if you need to split it into 2 or 3 even lengths Let me see now there are 12 inches in a foot and 16 fluid ounces in a pint so how do I do this again, oh yes the answer is 3 stone 5lbs 2 ounces per length

Ha! There you go with that Mother country stuff. It's 2 pints (16oz each) to the quart, 4 quarts to the gallon (128oz) and 48 to 53 12oz bottles to a 5 gallon batch of beer. Depending on how much gets spilled! Take care -Dave
