Which coolant pump brand is better?

Hey, so I've decided to replace the old corroded water pump in my 55.

For a while I was thinking of maybe going aftermarket and getting a high-flow FlowKooler pump since my 55 has a problem with overheating. But a guy on read on a forum said that a side-effect of a higher then stock pump is "cavitation" that the coolant channels will over time get worn wider and wider until it ruins the engine basically. Is this true? http://www.flowkoolerwaterpumps.com/store/p550/Water-Pump-1635-Ford,-Mercury-Y-Block-%3Cbr%3E%281954-62%29/product_info.html

I've looked for stock pumps that the auto stores sell and the two main brands sold are Murray and MasterPro, which of these two brands would make a better pump in your opinions? The Murray's pump is almost 60 bucks more expensive, but I don't want to let price determine it.

I guess while I'm asking, what temperature rating should I be looking for in a thermostat for a 272 Y-Block V8? I'm wondering if the thermostat I have is rated too high.

I didn't know Flow Kooler made a high volume pump for Y blocks.

In any case I got the improved concourse quality reproduction water pump from Macs I think it was I cannot remember but its exactly like the original but uses more modern ceramic seals over rubber that is supposed to last longer.

I have not put mine in traffic yet, hell I haven't even put her on the road yet but the idling I put her through to burn off moisture in the engine as well as to keep everything in working order she never goes past the middle of normal for me in 100* Texas heat.

If you use this pump and still have an over heating issue I would look at your radiator, I had mine rebuilt as it had four tubes completely disconnected from the top header and soldered over but the solder started to leak.

Also on the thermostat, these engines came with two different ones, they came standard with a 160*F thermostat with an optional High Temp 180*F thermostat as an option.  I believe the 180*F thermostat was used in colder climates.  Mine is running a standard 160*F thermostat as that is what the car came with standard.

I worry mostly about the Thermostat, as I have no idea what rating the thermostat I put in was. Even more worried as when I went to O'Riley's autoparts to ask what thermostat their computers came up to give someone with a 55 Ford, the computers came up with nothing. So I have no idea what the random person behind the counter gave me back then to put into the car.. I hope it wasn't some super modern 900 degree thermostat.

For a thermostat, I recommend the NAPA # 6 (THM6-170 degree) or Mr Gasket 4367.  Both are wide mouth thermostats that flow more water than the stock ones.  There was a Robertshaw one that was similar, but I understand they are no longer available.  Another items you may want to consider is blocking off most of the flow through the bypass.  Use a pipe plug with a small hole (1/8 inch) drilled in it and insert in the hose.  I believe the 3/8 pipe plug is the correct size.

Definitely get the radiator cleaned out if it hasn't been done.

The Robert Shaw thermostats are available.  The Mr Gasket is a Chinese copy.  Milodon have made in USA.  You can also get them from Stewart Components, which I think are also made in USA.
