After problems with two neoprene rear main seals, I am going with the new rope seal by Best Gasket.  In regards to sealing around the retainer, what points should receive attention with some RTV.
Thanks

Paul.  I prefer some ‘Copper Coat’ sealer at the block side flange of the seal retainer and the flat on the block where the retainer bolts up.  With the seal retainer raised about 1/16”-1/8” off of the block, I’ll put a dab or RTV in each of the side groove holes before putting the rubber side seals in place.  I’ll then push those side seals in so that they are sticking out about 3/8” above the oil pan gasket surface.  I’ll then add the ‘nails’ to the side seals.  Be sure the nails are installed on the crankshaft side of the seals and with light pressure on the rubber seals with the blade of a screw driver, a small hammer is used to tap the nails and seals down so they are flush with the pan gasket side of the seal retainer.  At this point simply finish pulling the seal retainer down and tighten those two bolts so the retainer is tight to the block.  You should see where the RTV did squeeze out at the retainer to block intersection which means you’ll have a good seal at that point.
