At 8:45 this morning, I lit the first fire in the Mummert pistoned (Probe) Eagle rodded newly built engine in the Hurricane. What a sweet sound, open headers barking out the cadence, 15486372. Makes me want to go scrub hunting. John in Selma, IN

John. Great to hear it’s up and running again. Can’t wait to hear how it flies down the dragstrip.

Guys: Thanks for the kind words. Ted, I don't expect much change in the power, since all the breathing parts are the same, only have lighter pistons and rods. Chuck, did you get an email from me a week or so ago? Concerning the build of this engine. John

John, Yes I did. Thanks for the information. It will be a while before I can seriously consider it though. Glad to hear the Hurricane is ready to go again. Can't wait to see it run! Always a pleasure. Chuck in NH

Congrats on the engine, one question: Were you able to get the pistons without the dome or did you modify them yourself for your blower application?

You know John, if you are bored and have nothing to do now that you are retired, you can always build a nice blower motor for my 56! Consider it a nice token of friendship for your neighbor up north! Rob

Mr4speed: I used 6.300 long Eagle rods for large journal sbc. Had the pistons honed out for the chev pins. Narrowed the big ends of the rods to Y size. Had the crank ground to chev size at stock Y stroke. Decked the block just enough to get it square and equal on both banks. Pre-assembled the short block without rings, and used a dial indicator on the flat portion of the pistons to find that they came out of the block .034. So I machined off the dome plus another .034 to get 0 deck. There are two very small eyebrows left of the original valve clearance notches. Glad I didn't have the crank stroked, the pistons may have been too thin on top with 6.300 rods. John in Selma, IN

John, On using SBC type rods, when you narrow the big ends, what is the difference in sizes, and is it enough to foul up rod bearings? Or can standard, non-modified bearings be used? I am still calculating and working long rod combos in my research. I saw those 331 Ford (mod motor) rods that are something like 6.6 or so, but that's just a little much, unless you do custom pistons. I got a form from Wiseco today, and for $800 or so, I can have a set custom built to my specs (ring lands lowered, thick crown for gobs o` boost, etc). Before I can do any of that though, I have to find a good rod though.....

James: The sbc rods are .943, the Y .871, so I had to take off .042. The chev big ends are offset, so I took all the material off the "wide" side of the rod. I made a fixture so I could cut a chamfer on the bearings to clear the radius on the crank. The crank guy said they make a chev bearing that is narrower, just for that purpose. I used the standard bearings and chamfered them. I would go with the Wiseco if I were you. Cost isn't that much more, and you will have a thicker piston top, I'm sure you are going to use more boost than I do. John in Selma, IN

Moz: We'd love to have you come to Columbus, I don't think Lon is exceeding the quota---yet. Rob, how many Aussies can we allow (tolerate) in a weekend? Retirement is nice, but think about what you lose, like vacations, sick days, holidays, etc. I don't get any of that stuff anymore. John in Selma, IN

John, I can handle as many Aussies as Lon can throw at me, bring them on! Just kidding the more the merrier I say. I have to give OLD Lonnie and the Aussies some credit though, they have the true Y spirit and come a LONG way for Columbus! I don't know what's up with my fellow Cannucks though, no one but me seems brave enough to take on the Aussie's! It makes me sad that Canada can only send ONE 56 Ford to represent our country. Then again it kind of reminds me of our Armed Forces today, seems our Government will only give them poor guys overseas barley enough equipment to survive! Oh and John, if you want, I will trade you my holidays, sick days, etc. for your retirement, only issue is you have to ask my wife when you are allowed to use those days!!!! Rob

frank & chuck see what happens when you work long hours i took hispanic for mexican turns out my grandmother was spanish so i can pass hows this for a blood line my fathers parents were spanish & irish my mothers parents were mother scottish father english so ive got five country's to chose from. but when you look at my blood line ive just realised im a tight assed backwards whinging person with a firey temper ! rob i think you should light a fire under all the other canadians & get them to take their cars as i told frank a while back if lon is making up 4 aussies that would be the limit any more would be an invasion !
