Hi there

Any of you guys tig welding experts? I'm trying to set up a temporary exhaust for a small test bed using 2" stainless and preformed bends.
After yards of practice welds its starting to look better but one process that eludes me is tig brazing using silicone/bronze or aluminium/bronze filler rod. I tried with some gas brazing rod but it just explodes.Crying  Is there a special rod for the tig process and what kind of amps are required?

Thanks in advance

Hey stuey
I'd recommend a pipe expander tool. You can get them for about $15-20, and there are varied sizes.
They are great as you can flare one end you are joining to allow the other to cup into it which makes a fillet type weld in place of a butt weld. May even help the flow reducing eddy currents and less internal penatration. Maybe google or you tube it. I bought one half way through fitting my exhaust, mandrel bends etc. and it made the job so much easier.

Additionally, I'm told if you use the right gas you can weld stainless with a mig!

thanks for the reply. I had not considered an expander but it may help one of my problems. That is once inside the welding helmet I tend to lose site of  the joint if it is a  tight  fit . I'd be able to see a lap joint much better and I could dispense with the filler rod.

Thanks

I have had fantastic results with stainless arc welding rods and poor results from MIG, even with the correct gas.

I have not got a mig outfit just a very old stick welder and a small tig set up.  I'm getting on ok butt welding the stainless tube using tig but what i'm  really after is how to tig braze as indicated on the Burns web site. I've also seen it done on "you tube" by Jody "welding tips and tricks". I'm guessing I've got the wrong brazing rod hence the explosions.

You must be a far better welder than me to stick weld exhaust pipes I would definitely blow holes.
Thanks for the replySmile

I use 1.6mm stainless rods, they flow fantastic on stainless pipe.

You might want to get in contact with a welding supply rep re the silicone & aluminum/bronze welding rod for Tig. I've used them both in stick form with good results, but have no knowedge of them for that process. By the way, just for information, aluminum bronze can make a very good facing for high impact situations. I used to face cinch anchor installation drift tools (made from capped Chrome moly tube) with it. It's very tough, but soft enough to avoid splintering off, even when beaten repeatedly with an 8 lb sludge hammer..

An 8lb Sludge hammer sounds fun BigGrin

just a follow up for those who may be interested
I've got hold of some silicone bronze brazing rods (Washington Alloys) and they don't explode. ran a couple of beads with the tig unit and it works. now  just need loads of practice.BigGrin
I think you guys know this stuff by the trade name Everdur.
