Just and idea, I was building my 312 for my 1960 and couldn't find a bent dipstick and tube to match, I had the machinist just make one. The angle of bend is around 30 degrees and is bent 6.5 inches from the botttom of the tube. Total tube length should be 17 total inches and then you can use your same dipstick on your truck. I used one from a 62 . There is a clamp that is welded to the tube and it is located 5 inches up from the bottom. I used the same diameter tubing as the old dipstick. I did buy a pre-bent one out but it was 2 inches too short for my truck dipstick. Hope this helps.

Morning fellows
idaho211, that's the way I did it. I purchased a dip stick from Macs, filled her with 6qts and kept trimming the tube till I got to the "full" mark. There are pics on Mr Mummerts site to give an idea of what's required. He indicates 15" length but I adjusted my home made one to suit the dipstick.

What size tubing is it?I tried to fit one that I have from another Y Block and it doesnt seem to fit in the block very well.It does look like there is a tube in block about a 1/2" down and that is about how far it seems to go.I didnt know if there was a broken piece or supposed to be there.It does not look jagged like it was broken looks like it is supposed to be there.The engine is actually a 272 bored to 292.I dont know if that makes a difference or not in tubing size.I was thinking about trying to find a Locar one that may fit in block and go that route.

I used 1/2" od stainless tube. its a bit heavy wall thickness but the dipstick fits ok and it was what I had.
I had the same step about 1/2" down and I guessed it was machined into the block to stop the end of tube .
It is a snug fit.

Stuey, you're not using "Imperial Quarts" are you? I'm sure you know an Imperial quart is 20% larger than the US quart. I have to convert litres to US quarts.

You trying to scare the life out of me? I must confess I hadn't given it a thought but it turns out I'm OK. I filled up with Joe Gibbs and it comes in US quarts/.946 liters phew.
I should remember that, when dad came home from the war he had one or two souvenirs including a US jerry can and I used to get sent to the corner shop for a "gallon" of paraffin/kerosene and we always wondered why some ended up on the floor!

I better check my Joe Gibbs. I just thought that they would be litres up here. Although a litre is pretty close to a US Gallon.
