Hey Racers! What if we put up here a list of best times each have driven? Not to brag (well, maybe a little...), but just to show everyone who has gone what and to make it more interesting we could even add a little info about each rides? And maybe even two different lists for 1/4 and 1/8 mile times? Like this... 1/4 mile list: 1. Bob Lindsay 7.966 350 cid Supercharged FED burning alcohol. 2. It hasn't been but a few years since Randy Gumalt broke the record and ushered in a new era of the Y-Block story. Since then amazing things have happened with our favorite engines. There has been a world wide surge in interest to make the Y do what we always new it could. Now 500hp streetable Y's are simply a matter of the right combination of parts. Then some guy puts twin turbo's on and tickles the 800hp mark in a pickup! Not to mention the land speed records getting ready to fall. Thanks for letting this old Y's guy be a part of it. Chuck

I don’t consider boost to be cheating, just a different level of performance. The physics are actually much simpler when boosting is applied.

Ted / Billy, redlights come when you're in the limit and times with EcoBoost are not valid in this list . Jyrki has -0.007 and -0.003 redlights also and I wonder why he had to leave so early... Time margins are so small in this sport... Also, like last year when Jyrki drove 8.885 he said it was s...it run, thus it was only 0.162 sec slower than our best!

I'm not sure if reaction times should be considered for your list, because most very low reactions are flukes, not typical times. In my case, my best reaction at Columbus was .001, but I have had two .000 green lights in recent years. I assure you, all 3 are flukes. At one meet at Bunker Hill Dragstrip in Indiana, after a round win a friend came running up the staging lanes shouting, you had a .500 light (different timers, .500 is perfect). I replied, that's just an average light for me. He asked, how so? I said half of them are .600 and half are .400.

If you are half a second late coming out of the hole, you will be half a second late going through the traps.
|
By Vic Correnti - 10 Years Ago

As I understand it the ET starts when you trip a beam that is something like 21 inches in front of the stage light. If you set there for three seconds it does not affect the ET because the ET does not start when the light is green but when you cross the beam. The reaction time only comes into play if you are racing against another car. When staged you are not where the 1/4 is starting from or timed from.

I'm with John (Hoosier Hurricane) on the reaction times. If reaction times were to be considered, then some bonafide statistics would need to be used meaning a valid 'n' number and putting a standard deviation into the mix. In my case, I run my cars in both electronic and non-electronic classes which by itself makes for a bimodal distribution of the values for each vehicle that's being raced.
|
By LordMrFord - 10 Years Ago

Ted, Vic and all... Reaction times really should be calculated only without any electronic help, so times with delay boxes should be left out . As you can see, we don't use one and also throttle stops are on our black list. Even, that we are brackett racing in our Super Pro ET class, where those would be helpful. (or PITA, thus more variations in settings...) Also, I don't count 1/4 times assumed by 1/8 mile times as those are not real. Car can run strong 1/8 but then lose power towards end or have a poor start and then run like a hell at the end... Buzz is thus only at the1/8 list.

I It is a Altered Chassis Chrome Moly tube, pro built in the 80s and certified to 7.50 Body is a fiberglass 55 thunderbird
Engine is a 1957 Lincoln 368 Y block bored and stroked to 383. 12.5 compression, roller cam, home made intake. 750 Holley converted to E-85. It made slightly more than 500 hp at the crank. Racing C-4 with a 4000 stall converter. Frankland Quick Change rear with 4.44 gears. 10.5 W x 31 Mickey Thompson tires I doubt I can run in the 9.50s in present configuration. I am about maxed out on engine performance

I didn't notice "roll out" mentioned as a factor in Reaction Times relative to E.T., but when I was racing regularly at LACR it certainly did make a difference. I would stage relatively deep for consistent reaction times, but stage as shallow as possible to maximize roll out (which is like a running start) for best E.T.s

The car weighs 2750lb going down the track. So far the best ET for a 1/4 mile track come from Bakersfield, elevation is 650ft. Unfortunately we go there in March for the March Meet. DA hovers around 2000ft. The last time we were there we had the 343cu in motor form John Hildebrands 31' coupe in the car but had 4.88's in it, there was definitley more there but when your 300 miles from home you run what you brung. The new 355 cu in motor is a runner, and coupled with 4.56 gears the car has picked up. Hopefully we can get to a 1/4 mile track when the weather is better before March.

I ran a 13.72 @ 101.67 mph and backed it up with a 13.79 @ 100.01mph at Cecil County Maryland Dragway Dec 15 2001. The air was good, the car was new, and I was younger then. Also Cecil County has a reputation for being very quick. The car still looks pretty good, this is last summer.

Anything new happened at strips this year? Our altered has stayed in garage all year, so nothing to report... Still lickin' wounds after disappointing 2018 season...

The infamous 355Y from Todd Fergusons Falcon is back up running. Now installed in the Ernie Phillips 56 T bird now owned by Joe Cebe. Testing at Sacramento this morning for the Division 7 Summit Series finals ripped off a 6.11 1/8th mile @ 111.85mph. Unfortunately they are not running the full 1/4 mile this weekend. We've got some work to do. With the launch limiter down at 3600rpm 5* of retard pulled for 1 sec and instant center as low as we get with the current ladder bar it strikes the wheelie bar like Mark McGwire. We've been shooting for Heritage Series (C Gas) for the last couple of years and think we will very close in March.

This launch is much prettier with the wheelie bar setup closer. Friday night was ugly, front wheels 3ft in the air, sparks flying when the car came down. Nothing a sledge hammer and a cresent wrench can't fix.

Hot Rod reunion at Bakersfield Famoso Race Way. The T-Bird ran well. The track has National Event caliber prep. We had the car tuned down at the launch to keep it from star gazing. Best time 9.71 @ 138.10 mph. They have a live Pod Cast of the whole weekend. I'll try to see if I can find the time for the test pass this morning. Were shooting for C -GAS at the March Meet.
California Hot Rod Reunion Saturday October 23rd @ 33:00 minute mark.

John, Good to see the car on the track, best times ever for the car. The car previously got close to the 9's on nitrous, but never got there. Hope to see it run in person again. Ernie

After doing some revamping on the rear suspension and dropping a few pounds out of the car the T-Bird clicked off a 6.005 et @ 113.5mph in the 1/8th mile at Barona on Saturday. The 5's are in our reach.

Any more updates or progress? My son Roope (16y) will be driving our altered for the first time in 20-21st of august at Motopark raceway here in Finland. The class will be ProET as the N/A 292 cid won't be going faster than 11.50 anyhow. But, hopefully he will be the second fastest Y-block driver in Europe... Last year, after competing four seasons with Junior Drag Bikes, he drove three races with Ford Probe GT after earning his license to run in adult classes with cars.

So here is the report from my son Roope's first experiment with our now N/A altered. Fridays test day was almost disaster. First run was just trial to see everything works and that car goes straight and to get to used it's behaviours. 19.313 / 119,47 km/h. After the run car stalled to return strip and didn't start again. After awhile it started again and Roope was able to drive it to the pit area. We fired the engine again and again it stalled after warming to 179F. Another try and same result. It fires after cooling awhile and stalls at about 180F. Conclusion, it's either the coil or condensator. Coil is new Bosch quality part and condensator is the one that was there when I bought the old 1955 or 1956 distributor. Hmmm...maybe it's the old 6V condensator and it's not suitable for drag racing with 12V coil... No parts onboard, so I had to drive 75 kilometers to nearest parts store from where I found new LADA (USSR car) condensator and spare coil also. In fact I bought two condensators as they were 6 euros each. Then I drove back to pits. That trip took so long that I was back at track 20 minutes before driving time was over. I called my son to dress up to his driving suit and he was ready to jump in the car when I arrived. I quickly put the condensator to it's place and we fired up the engine and Roope drove straight to line up. We had about 7 minutes left and starter called us immediately to the burn out slot. And he went 12.975 / 169,78 km/h! No issues with engine. That was the test day. Saturday and qualifications. We managed to drive six rounds in all classes and the day was hot for Finns. 28 degrees celsius all day and clear blue sky. We did some carb tuning for every round and added more fuel for Demon 650 dp. We started from 68 in front and 74 at the back and ending to run 82 jets in both of them. Time slips got better and better each time we added fuel. 12.934 / 168.95, 12.586 / 171.59, 12.408 / 177.91, 12.145 / 180.71, 12.113 / 178.57 and 12.086 / 181.02 km/h. Best 60 ft was 1.764 seconds and best R/T was .044. So, last three runs were very close to 12.00 and good dial in for Sundays eliminations would of course be 12.00? Right? But no, we are here to make new personal records and go as fast as possible. We opted to put 11.80 on sides of the altered as the weather would be cooler in the morning. And in the morning, wind was blowing in the direction that would boost us to new record. And no, it didn't go that way! We lost in the first round with 12.123 / 178.97 km/h. Thus Roope took better reaction than opponent. But hey! That's bracket racing! For the next event in three weeks, we are going to change torque converter from 5000 rpm ( good with 975 hp twin turbo engine) to 2500 rpm unit to better suite that N/A low horse power engine. Let's see how that will do. We want to go to elevens for sure...

So, as list is now updated with Roope's time in #17 spot. I had forgotten that our friend Ari Salo drove with our Altered years back in one race and managed to run only one time before we lost oil pressures. Still, he drove 9.30 first time sitting in a race car with two turbos and having to shut down before finish line...

Not when the car was built with twin turbo's. Looks a bit tame now though.

55blacktie (8/27/2022) Isn't the parachute overkill? For my car, the parachute is not required unless exceeding 150 mph. On very rare occasions I do slip up and hit that number. By design, I try to keep the car in the 146-148 mph range. Here’s an ET slip from the June Y-Block Shootout at Dragway 42 where in the heat of the battle, I did break that 150 mph number with the Y. Daniel had such a lead on me out of the gate that I ended up having to push it to catch him at the finish line. Daniel still took the stripe but I did take the win by lieu of the red light by Daniel.

Last round of Finnish Championships was at Kauhava Strip ( ex airforce airfield) and we had friday as a test & tune day. We managed to run eight times an got 11.883 as a best result. Saturdays qualifications were disappointing as there was lot's of track cleaning and only three runs. Weather was cool from mornings +10 degrees celsius to evenings + 16 degrees. Roope's second run was ok 11.928 / 182.97 km/h and that meant #10 out of 13 position at qualification. Sundays eliminations started with win over Roni Tekoniemi's AMC Javelin as Roni took a red light. On the second round it was Roope's turn to take a .100 red light against Johanna Ruusunen's Valiant. That was sad as Johanna stalled her Valiant after just jumped fron the starting line and didn't manage to start the car again. But, rules are as written and the one that makes a mistake first, loses... So, it was time to go home again and to fall into winter hibernation... Well, before the race we changed the converter from about 5000 rpm stall to about 2500 rpm stall version. That didn'n help us as best 60 ft was only 1,8 something and at the last race we had several 1.7s. ET record for Roope and N/A altered is now that 11.883 with 183,93 km/h. For next year? We really don't know... Adding NOS maybe, but that means building another bottom end...
