Guys, are there many y blocks available for rebuild in Europe?
By Hollow Head - 10 Years Ago
Well... in my garage there is five blocks and six cranks and three sets of heads, in jyrkis garage there is about the same amount of things, and also Simo has two engines and Tero has more than several engines in his garage. Oh, I forgot those four blocks that are stored at my work...w00t. We had quite a lot Fords over here at the fifties and sixties and lots of trucks too. Most of those y-blocks were in fire engines and we have been collecting those for years. Say, five to ten years back nobody wanted those and we got them cheap. Nowadays people call us from time to time and try to buy our parts sources empty with no luck BigGrin.
By MoonShadow - 10 Years Ago
Gosh, You made it hail! That's a pretty stout sounding Y-Block. Chuck
By glrbird - 10 Years Ago
What are the differances between the new engine and the old,(besides the window in the block) Sounds good so far.
By LordMrFord - 10 Years Ago
Stiffer valve springs, lighter valve geometry, a new engine management system,153lb/hr injectors...
By Hollow Head - 10 Years Ago
Lighter titanium valves and retainers. Hopefully more rpm and speed at the finish line. Last summer we never went past 6000 rpm at the end. Still 232 km/h (144 mph) and 8.885 as last season best result. In 2012 our best result was 8.723 and 150 mph and even then the engine didn't rev past 6000 rpm... Industrial engine at it's best BigGrin! So, if get it to 7500 this summer... or even more?
By LordMrFord - 10 Years Ago
Injectors what we used in last season had calculated max HP-value about 650HP, so they didnt work properly at the end of the track and old engine management system was too slow to tell us that with ~1 hz logger.  9 logging moments in quarter mile with old box vs. over 900 with new.
By Hollow Head - 10 Years Ago
And that 650 hp was calculated with E85 fuel what we are still using. No Meth for us yet BigGrin.

Is it still a megasquirt?

Yes. MS 3.

By Hollow Head - 10 Years Ago

Our racing weekend was not the best possible again as in the first run one titanium valve stuck to bronze guide and Jyrki lifted after 6.8 seconds in the run. Still 9.1 sec with only 211 km/h. Good 1.27 60 ft. with about 1.9 bar of boost though... So, we took the head of and got the valve moving with little tinkering. Head back on and to next burn out where waters came out from another head gasket. Marchalls pointed us back to pits and then we took both head off and put new Fel Pros on. Time run short and we could not make another pass or even warm up the engine. So, our sunday started from last place qualifier and we had no glue how fast it would jump now. I put 8.50 dial on our body and Jyrki drove 9.4 with 227 km/h and poor 1.37 60 ft. and lousy 0.3 reaction time. So, we lost that run and day was over for us.... After that run we discovered that one pressure hose clamp was broken and that explained loss in boost pressure at that run. we had only 1.1 bar and that's one reason the car didn't jump from the line. Good things? Engine is still in one piece and it revved up to 7200 rpm, no issues with spark and we can change head gaskets quite quickly if needed Wink. Next race will be 28.-29th of June, so there is lots of time to do things better. Here is a video about our journey...

So. looking forward to next race! We have the power...

Last weekend was just another disaster Angry. Two runs and on the third we toasted the Powerglide! At burn out slot, when Jyrki hit the transbrake button, car jumped backwards. Front band was worn out, all friction plates were goodbye and also couple of small parts had to be changed. We opened up the tranny and put it back together at the pits with a help of a professional transmission guy. He added one friction plate and took couple of parts off from the tranny (speed secrets!) and now it should be better than ever! Sadly we could not test it as Sunday was full of rain. But, next thursday to sunday is next round of Finnish Drag Race series and then we go....FAST!!! The times? 9.2  and 9.3 with slipping tranny was all we could do...
Videos here...
By glrbird - 10 Years Ago
Did the trans guy have the parts, or do you carry around a rebuild kit? Now winter mantinance should include the trans, right? Still a good start on the engine combo.

He had the parts cause he knows that the racers are good customers during the race weekend. Smile
Kivinummi is one of the most respected automatic transmission guy in Finland so the tranny is fine now...although he's son is our opponent in the same class.Hehe

Good start because everything else is in one piece and working but the transmission. Bad because times dont start with 8.

Its too much time since the last record. Always something...trigger, tranny, boost pipe, valves, holes in the block, the team, the driver, position of the moon...duh.

...and the exhaust valve is stuck again after first pull of the weekend.Sad

8.8 sec and something. 8.7 is haunting us.Angry
By Hollow Head - 10 Years Ago

5 runs in three days, couple of stuck exhaust valves on Thursday / right head off & on again and pair of good ETs and a new top speed record 243 km/h for the team this weekend. Lost in first elimination round to overall winner of our class. Dial in 8.80 and Jyrki run 8.844 but took .448 R/T against .068 on the other line. Best ETthis weekend 8.755 is far from our best (8.723) but good thing is that the engine is still running strong. Two weeks to 1/8 mile race at Kalajoki. Plan is to finally add ALS to our engine management to raise boost easier at the line. Little wheel spin and front end bouncing still with car. 6 psi in rear tyres seems to be good, but maybe need to try 5 psi at Kalajoki... Here is a video about this weekend. Enjoy!

Slow Motion rubber burnin' and launches. Tomorrow heading to Kalajoki 1/8 race with anti lag system operating. Two seconds with trans brake and throttle full open and boost raises to 1 bar. Should be fun on Saturday and Sunday Wink.

Videos from Kalajoki airfield track. Qualification position 6 out of 14 cars. Jyrki broke with 0.007 seconds in a second round ( Dial 5.71 and Jyrki drove 5.703!) and that was it this time. First round was a solo as competitor broke his Firebird. 60 ft's again 1.26 s as best and 198,9 km/h (fastest car in our class this time) at the finish line. Two weeks to Final round of the season w00t. Car is ok after four races. No stuck valves anymore. We checked the main and rod bearings today and only normal wear visible.

Good to hear the engine is preforming without problems. I was watching the video and noticed the launch has point where the chassis unloads and slips the tires  There could be some lower 60ft times if you can find a way to correct that issue. Maybe Ted could help with some sugestions. Does anyone ask why your team runs a 50 year old engine, or how you make it so fast?. Great Job.

By Hollow Head - 10 Years Ago
Gary, commentators are well informed why we do what we do and they remember to tell it to crowd almost every time we go to the line. They too wait for us to break current Y-block WR sooner or later... Commentators even follow us to restaurants and then they give comments about how we performed there BigGrin. Last time we did 131 euro bill of two steaks, two beers, two whiskeys (21 year old) and two classes of red wine! Commentators didn't see the bill, but mentioned about our lunch next morning when Jyrki was at burn out slot Wink. That wheel spin and bouncing is a bit annoying thing, what we have not yet solved. Maybe higher stall converter and going from 4.29 gears to 4.11 would help, but that trial takes more money that we have now to spend. We have tried different tyre pressures (5 psi was ok at Kalajoki) and different rpm's at the launch. And now we have that Anti Lag System to set up too. At Kalajoki it didn't yet work quite as we wanted, but we are going to right direction with it.
By glrbird - 10 Years Ago
So you guys are like ROCK STARS? Thats really cool.
By Hollow Head - 10 Years Ago
Well... not really! They just happened to be at the same restaurant BigGrin. And maybe good stories about drivers are so rare, they just had to say something... But, they really like the look of our altered.

Mostly it's confusing if you look faces of spectators walking by the pit and find its a really Y-Block what lays under the pipejungle. Tongue

It is nice to know there is people still, who recognize the Y.

Six runs during final round of Finnish Drag Race Championships in Motopark raceway and engine is still in one piece. Lost in third round of 32 car ladder. Good news is that all runs were under nine seconds and best was 8.644 and it is now new European Record! And as a back up 8.660 is also good one.  Also our best top speed is now 245,49 km/h. Previous best was 243 km/h. 2 kilos of boost is NICE!
8.845 / 245,49
8.674 / 231,89
8.660 / 238,42
8.661 / 244,25
8.644 / 245,03
8.715 / 245,03 !!!

Glad you had a break free weekend. Its about time. If it stays like this you can really get onto the tunning and just keep going faster. Congratulations on TWO European records. Chuck

Great Job and times! If you get that thing on a boat you may make it to Columbus in time!

Columbus would be nice but we need a big sponsor for that and finnish Y-block racing part markets are quite small in today.

That’s an excellent run of numbers and it’s good to see the car going rounds with fewer issues.  For awhile I thought you might let me slip back into the #3 all time quickest slot with my current combination.  You have definitely lowered the mark to the point that it will take some serious work to just get to where you are now.  Good job guys.
By Hollow Head - 10 Years Ago
Ted, I'm sure you will cut couple of tenths off of your times, so you will give us good pressure with your stroker motor. We really should have gone a lot faster this year, but maybe this "one tick at a time" approach with turbo screw is wiser than that 2012 " hmmm.... half a turn ain't gonna hurt anything" method BigGrin. By the way, how much stall do you have and what is your rear end ratio? Maybe we have to lower a little our gears from 4.29 to 4.11 to get some more top speed...?

8.660 is made with 1.93 Bar / 28PSI of boost but when fuel pressure was too low, air/fuel ratio was too lean before finish line.
Then we rised pressure and the moment before finish line was too rich so boost didnt rise enough, only 1.6 Bar / 23 PSI but there was still more power than before.
Then came the Elimination day and tuning the engine to get more power in E.T. class is quite stupid thing to do, so we dint lean the engine enough to find the sweet spot.

There is still more power in reserve beneath the 2 Bar line. How much, I dont know but I hope we will find it after the winter hibernation. Engine goes maybe a little bit too rich in whole quarter mile and the end is way too rich.
Then there is ignition advance what isn't dyno proofed so there might be some loose horses too.

........By the way, how much stall do you have and what is your rear end ratio? Maybe we have to lower a little our gears from 4.29 to 4.11 to get some more top speed...?
The converter stall is 4500 rpms.  I’m currently running 4.30 rear gears but considering switching to 4.44's or 4.56’s.  I’ll not be doing any gear changes until later in the year though when the temperatures are cooler.

By Hollow Head - 10 Years Ago
Interesting... We have 33 x 14.5 - 15 tyres and we are suffering lack of speed and revs as we have only 7200 rpm at the finish line due home ported C0AE heads. That's why I consider gear change as an option to get more speed, if our engine makes power enough to launch it hard with lower gears. So, as I assume, your engine revs much higher at the end, what is your point to get more gears? Our 60 feets are almost equal, but we have issues with bouncing and slipping.

Interesting... ..... So, as I assume, your engine revs much higher at the end, what is your point to get more gears? Our 60 feets are almost equal, but we have issues with bouncing and slipping.

I run two different sets of tires and wheels; a set of wider and shorter tires for normal bracket racing and a narrower set with much narrower wheels for ‘quicker’ runs.  The narrower set of wheels allows the tires to grow another 3-4” in diameter which helps the topend charge.  My rpms going through the traps are in the 6600-6700 rpm range.  It’s because I do have some rpms left at the top end of the track that I’m considering more rear gear.  Converter slippage is minimal in my case also which may be a player in your combination.

As season is over and dragster standing at my garage, we have time to figure out new ideas. We found two nice covers for our turbo inlets from yesterdays Swap Meet and now we have no worries about bugs crawling into them w00t. Actually those are old KC off road lamp shields.

By yalincoln - 10 Years Ago
have you tried tapered inlet pipes on the turbo's? like bell mouth stacks on a carb! just a thought!
By Hollow Head - 10 Years Ago
It still hops up and down and John Hildebrandt suggested us to raise the pressure to rear tyres until wheels start to spin at launches. Just to see does it help over that issue. Too bad season is over and we have to wait until May to have it back on the track again. And about those stacks, we haven't tried them yet. So, we don't know how much it does to airflow. Well, maybe I have to google that thing to learn some more. This year we went with very tight budget (as always!) and those didn't even came to my mind...
By MoonShadow - 10 Years Ago
If you get to do some testing get some profile shots all the way through the launch. Including the bounce. Might be illuminating. Chuck
