Harry and I are likely the only ones on this site with cylinder wall sonic testers. Not sure about Harry, but I have sonic tested very few LYB engines and the last one of those was a 332 LYB back in 2004. A copy of the data sheet for that one is no longer in the files.

Because of core shift within the various oem blocks, it’s tough to make assumptions about cylinder wall thicknesses in a particular family of blocks as a whole. Because of that, any blocks that are going to be heavily bored are sonic tested first so that any preconceived notions about the actual cylinder wall thicknesses can be substantiated or eliminated. Those preconceived notions are typically proven wrong. If there is a substantial amount of core shift, then the sonic test data is helpful in ‘offset boring’ the cylinders in order to better equalize the cylinder wall thicknesses.
